The Valongo Wharf archaeological site, in the port district, is the stone landing place where enslaved Africans arrived in Brazil in the 19th century. UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage list in 2017 as a site of memory. Visit with respect; the Pedra do Sal, a cradle of samba in the neighbourhood’s Afro-Brazilian community, is a few streets away.
